Veneers

veneers

Veneers are extremely thin slips of porcelain that are custom-made to fit over the front and possibly the biting surfaces of teeth that are visible when smiling. This is largely a cosmetic procedure and multiple veneers are often used to change the colour of teeth, but treatment is highly versatile.

Porcelain veneers are useful for:

  • Mending cracks or chips in teeth
  • Replacing areas of teeth that have worn down, for example through tooth grinding
  • Covering up internally stained teeth that will not respond to tooth whitening
  • Changing the overall shape and size of teeth
  • Closing up or minimising gaps in between teeth and for generally creating a more perfect smile

Our dentists at Blue House Dental will work with you to create a custom treatment plan, showing the number of veneers required, and the costs involved. Well-maintained veneers will typically last at least ten years before they need replacing. You can brush and floss your teeth as normal, but it’s best to avoid crunching ice cubes or any extremely hard foods with your veneers as this could chip or crack them.

What is the Procedure for Veneers?

It generally takes two appointments to have your veneers made and fitted. The first appointment is to prepare your teeth, and this is normally done using a local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable. It’s usually necessary for your dentist to remove some tooth material to make room for the veneer. Even though veneers are incredibly thin, most teeth will need to be shaped beforehand to prevent the veneer from looking too bulky and unnatural. Once the teeth have been prepared your dentist will take an impression to send to the dental laboratory. This is used to custom-make your veneers, a process that is likely to take two weeks or so. Once your veneers are ready they can be fitted and adjusted as necessary before being permanently bonded in position.
