Your First Appointment

We warmly welcome new patients to our clinic, and will ensure you receive a thorough examination at your first appointment. This is a chance for us to get to know you, and to hopefully build up a good professional relationship that will last for many years. If you are particularly nervous or anxious about dental visits, then please do let us know as there are lots of things we can do to help you feel more comfortable and relaxed.

Comprehensive Dental Examination

Your dentist at Blue House Dental will check your oral tissues which includes the inside of your cheeks, the roof and floor of your mouth and your tongue. We are looking for any lumps or bumps, or any colour changes to the tissues in your mouth as this could indicate disease. We’ll also look at the way your teeth bite together (occlusion), and will clinically examine each tooth for any signs of cavities. We will gently probe your gums for any signs of gum disease.

Dental X-rays

We will probably want to take a full set of dental x-rays as these help us gain a more complete picture of your current dental health so we can customise future treatments. If you recently had dental x-rays at another dental clinic, it is worth bringing them with you, or asking them to be forwarded to us as they may be sufficient.

Your Medical History

We will also need to know your medical history, including any medications you may be taking, and the current dosage. This is because certain conditions or medications can increase the risk of dental problems. For example, certain medications increase the risk of dry mouth, which in turn increases the risk of periodontal disease and tooth decay. Some medical conditions, in particular diabetes, increase the risk of gum disease. All this information helps us tailor your preventative dental care plan to so we can provide you with high quality dental care.

After we have completed our examination we’ll discuss our findings with you, along with any recommendations for future treatment. If you don’t understand something, please feel free to speak up as we know it can be quite tricky to take in a lot of new information, particularly if you are at all anxious.
