Why Wear a Mouthguard?

Lots of people enjoy playing sports, but facial injuries are more common than you think. Contact and non-contact sports can result in chipped or broken teeth, or in teeth being knocked out completely. The cost of repairing or replacing teeth can mount up fast. It is possible to buy over-the-counter mouthguards. Some can be used straight out of the packet, while others are softened in hot water (boil and bite) before being adapted as best possible to fit around the teeth. While so called boil and bite mouthguards offer a little more protection, neither is great. They can also be pretty uncomfortable to wear so they are more likely to remain in the packet rather than in your mouth.

The Advantages of a Custom-Made Mouthguard

This is why we recommend keen sports players have a custom-made mouthguard. Blue House Dental can take impressions of your teeth to fabricate a mouthguard which offers maximum protection to your teeth, jaws and facial structures. Mouthguards are generally designed to only cover the upper teeth, but if you have a fixed dental appliance on your lower teeth, for example a brace, we may recommend a protective mouthguard for your lower teeth as well. A custom mouthguard will fit closely around your teeth and gums, and you’ll find it is comfortable to wear as it will not hinder breathing or speech. Although a little more expensive than over-the-counter mouthguards, a custom mouthguard could save you time and money.

Caring For Your Mouthguard

It is simple to look after your mouthguard, as all you need to do is rinse it after each use, and brush it gently with a soft toothbrush and a little toothpaste. Store it in the container provided and make sure it is away from direct heat as this could distort it. If properly cared for, it should last for several years before it needs replacing.
