Introduction to dental implants

Dental implants are widely regarded as the gold standard for tooth replacement, offering a permanent solution that mimics the look, feel, and function of natural teeth. The process involves surgically placing a titanium post into the jawbone, serving as an artificial tooth root. This strong foundation securely holds replacement teeth, restoring your smile and enabling you to eat and speak with confidence.

Beyond aesthetics and functionality, implants offer significant oral health benefits, such as preserving jawbone integrity by stimulating natural bone growth. Properly cared for, dental implants can last many years, providing patients with renewed confidence and a natural-looking smile.

Why Choose Dental Implants?

Dental implants are an exceptional alternative to traditional tooth replacement options like bridges or dentures. Unlike bridges, which require the modification of healthy teeth, implants leave adjacent teeth intact. They also prevent jawbone loss, a critical advantage over other methods. Traditional dentures often cause discomfort and instability, but implants provide a secure, natural feel while improving support and comfort.

A dental professional will assess your oral health and create a personalized treatment plan. The process typically begins with a consultation to determine your suitability for implants and to explore your options. By acting like natural tooth roots, implants stimulate bone renewal and prevent jawbone deterioration, making them an effective solution for patients who have lost teeth due to gum disease or other conditions.

Types of Dental Implants

Dental implants are designed to address a variety of needs, depending on the number of missing teeth and the condition of the jawbone.

  • Single Tooth Implants: Perfect for replacing one tooth, seamlessly blending with your natural teeth.
  • Multiple Tooth Implants: Used to support bridges or multiple replacement teeth, restoring function and aesthetics.
  • Full Arch Implants (e.g., All-on-4): Involve placing four or more implants in the upper or lower jaw to support an entire set of replacement teeth.

The type of implant recommended depends on your specific needs, jawbone quality, and desired outcome.

Suitability and evaluation

Determining if dental implants are right for you starts with a comprehensive evaluation by a dental professional. This includes assessing your oral health, jawbone density, and the condition of surrounding teeth and gums. Factors like gum disease, bone loss, or medical conditions may impact your suitability for implants, but advanced imaging tools such as X-rays and CT scans help plan the most effective treatment.

If issues like insufficient bone density or active gum disease are detected, additional treatments such as bone grafting may be recommended to ensure the best outcome.

Preparing for implant surgery

Preparation is key to achieving long-lasting results. During the initial consultation, your dentist will review your medical history, discuss your goals, and develop a tailored treatment plan. In some cases, bone grafting may be required to strengthen the jawbone before implant placement.

Before surgery, patients are given specific pre-operative instructions, such as dietary restrictions, avoiding smoking, and ensuring transportation home after the procedure. Careful preparation minimizes risks and sets the stage for a smooth surgical experience and successful healing.

Bone health and growth

Strong, healthy bone is essential for successful dental implants. When an implant is placed, the surrounding bone gradually fuses with the titanium post, creating a secure base for the replacement tooth. Conditions such as gum disease or osteoporosis can weaken bone health and may require additional treatments, like bone grafting, to restore strength.

Maintaining good oral hygiene and addressing underlying medical conditions support bone health and improve the long-term success of your dental implants.

Denture stabilization with mini dental implants

For those struggling with loose or unstable dentures, mini dental implants offer an affordable and effective solution. Over time, tooth loss can lead to jawbone deterioration, making it harder for dentures to fit securely. Mini implants stabilize dentures, enhancing comfort and restoring confidence in eating and speaking.

Mini implants are particularly beneficial for lower dentures, which often lack stability compared to upper dentures. They are placed in both the upper and lower jaws to provide firm support for dentures, ensuring functionality and satisfaction.

How mini dental implants work?

Mini dental implants are smaller and narrower than traditional implants, yet they are made from the same durable titanium alloy. The implant’s ball-shaped head fits into a socket-like attachment in the denture, snapping securely into place.

Many mini implant-supported dentures are removable for easy cleaning, maintaining oral hygiene while improving stability. Typically, four mini implants are used to stabilize a full denture, though this may vary based on individual needs.

What is the dental implant procedure?

Dental implant surgery involves a multi-stage process, including placement, healing, and restoration.

Implant Placement: A titanium post is surgically inserted into the jawbone, acting as an artificial tooth root. If the jawbone is too thin or soft, bone grafting may be needed to create a stable foundation. Titanium is used for its unique ability to integrate with bone, ensuring long-term stability

Healing and Integration: The implant is left to fuse with the surrounding bone over several months, creating a solid base. During this period, patients are advised to stick to soft foods and follow aftercare instructions to ensure proper healing.

Abutment and Restoration: Once healed, an abutment is attached to the implant. This small metal post protrudes above the gum line and supports the final restoration, whether a crown, bridge, or denture. The restoration is custom-made to match your natural teeth for a seamless appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most people are suitable for dental implants, provided they are in reasonable general and dental health. We will need to carry out various diagnostic tests to determine your suitability, including a CT scan to assess the amount of healthy bone in your jaw. The CT scan is also used to plan the precise placement of your dental implants.

Dental implants may take a little longer to complete, but treatment could last for life, and the results are superior to alternative methods of tooth replacement.

The actual procedure is very similar to conventional dental implants. You will need a full consultation with one of our dentists at Blue House Dental to assess your suitability for this procedure. We will want to know a little bit about your medical history, including any medications or diseases that may affect treatment. We also carry out diagnostic tests that include dental x-rays and a CT scan. This shows us exactly how much bone is available for the mini dental implants, and enables us to plan surgery. One of the advantages of having mini dental implants is that less bone is required to hold the implant in position. The procedure to insert the implants is very straightforward as they are simply screwed in position and there is no need to open up the gums, and no need for stitches. Mini dental implants can often be immediately ‘loaded’ which means dentures can be stabilised the same day as surgery.
